STUDENT ENRICHMENT

The committee for Student Enrichment works with the Enrichment Specialist (ES) and the school staff to develop ways to advance 6th-8th grade student learning across subject areas. Studies have shown that students can learn more challenging content at earlier ages than traditionally expected. To this end we work to enhance student learning, increase student achievement, and encourage professional development that strengthen teachers' content knowledge and in-class practices.

Student enrichment is led by Mr. Tommy Firesheets our Enrichment Specialist. Mr. Firesheets can be reached at:

BIO - Tommy Firesheets

I was born, raised, and educated near Richmond, Virginia where my family has been living since the early 1700's. I received my undergraduate degree from Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia, a small liberal arts college. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration with a concentration in United States History. History is my true love and passion having grown up in and around Jamestown, Williamsburg, and the battlefields from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.

I left college and took a job in corporate America, which as not my cup of tea. After four years, I left that position, moved to Europe for a year and began working with children teaching English in a private Catholic school in Madrid, Spain. When I returned to the U.S., I became certified to teach in Virginia and started my career as an elementary school teacher. I taught grades three through five over the course of four years, in a center based gifted program. I left elementary school and moved to middle school where I could focus on teaching United States and Virginia History.

Moving to Atlanta in 2005 was a great change, leaving the middle school where I taught and attended in my hometown. I began my career in Georgia in Fulton County, choosing to stay only a year before moving to APS. I am beginning my third year at Inman, having taught both sixth and seventh grade. I am in a new position this year, becoming Inman's first Enrichment Specialist, working with teachers and students, compacting, differentiating, accelerating, and enriching instruction for all learners.

My goal this year is to ensure all students are challenged to the fullest while still maintaining high interest in learning. The position was created because there is a need to continue to meet the needs of all learners and promote academic growth, moving as many learners into the exceeds category on all standardized tests. Renzulli Learning will play a major role in the differentiation process here at Inman.
